Welcome to the Course
Canva is no longer just a design tool — it is a powerful video editor used by solopreneurs, content creators, educators, and small business owners to produce professional-quality videos without expensive software.
In this course you will learn everything from uploading footage to exporting platform-perfect videos for YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and more.
Getting Started with Canva Video
Setting up your workspace and uploading media
Lesson 1.1 — Setting Up Your Canva Account
Before you begin editing, confirm your account has the right plan. Canva Free gives you basic video tools, while Canva Pro and Canva for Teams unlock additional features including background remover, brand kits, and premium audio.
- 1Go to canva.com and sign in or create a free account.
- 2Click Create a Design from the homepage.
- 3Search for a video format (e.g., "YouTube Video", "Instagram Reel") or enter a custom size.
- 4Your canvas opens in the Canva Editor — this is your editing workspace.
Always choose your target platform format first. This sets the correct canvas dimensions so you never have to resize at the end.
Lesson 1.2 — Uploading Your Video Files
Canva supports uploading video files from your device, Google Drive, Dropbox, and more. You can also record directly inside Canva using your webcam or screen recorder.
- 1In the left panel, click Uploads.
- 2Click Upload Files and select your video file. Supported formats: MP4, MOV, AVI, WEBM, MKV.
- 3Wait for the upload to process — large files may take a minute.
- 4Once uploaded, drag the video thumbnail onto your canvas or click it to add it.
- 5To record instead: Click the Record tab under Uploads → choose Webcam, Screen, or Both.
Canva Free: up to 5GB per upload. Canva Pro: up to 100GB storage. Maximum file size per upload is 1GB for video files.
Lesson 1.3 — Navigating the Video Timeline
The timeline appears at the bottom of the screen when video is on the canvas. It is the core of your editing workflow.
- 1Click any video on the canvas to see a purple bar appear in the timeline at the bottom.
- 2The timeline shows each page/scene as a separate clip segment.
- 3Use the playhead (the vertical line) to scrub through your video.
- 4The Play button lets you preview your full video at any time.
- 5Pages in Canva = scenes in your video. Each page can have its own content, timing, and transitions.
Editing Your Video Clips
Trimming, splitting, transitions, text, and effects
Lesson 2.1 — Trimming and Splitting Clips
Trimming removes unwanted footage from the beginning or end of a clip. Splitting breaks a clip into two parts so you can delete, rearrange, or add content in between.
- 1To Trim: Click the video on the canvas. In the toolbar, click Edit Video (or double-click the clip). Drag the left or right edge of the purple bar in the timeline to shorten the clip.
- 2To Split: Place the playhead where you want the split. Click the Scissors icon (Split) in the timeline controls. The clip divides into two independent segments.
- 3To delete a segment: click it in the timeline and press Delete on your keyboard.
- 4To reorder scenes: drag pages in the page panel on the left side.
Press S while your playhead is at the desired point to split a clip instantly.
Lesson 2.2 — Adding Text, Titles, and Captions
Text overlays make your videos more engaging and accessible. Canva's text tools include hundreds of animated text styles.
- 1Click Text in the left panel.
- 2Choose a heading, subheading, or body text style — or pick an animated text template.
- 3Type your text, adjust font, size, color, and alignment in the top toolbar.
- 4In the timeline, drag the text element's bar to control exactly when it appears and disappears.
- 5For auto-captions (Canva Pro): Click your video → Edit Video → Captions → Generate. Canva transcribes speech automatically.
Lesson 2.3 — Transitions Between Scenes
Transitions smooth the movement between one video scene and the next, giving your content a polished, professional feel.
- 1In the page panel on the left, hover between two pages.
- 2Click the Transition icon (a diamond shape) that appears between the pages.
- 3Choose from options: Dissolve, Slide, Circle, Cube, Breath, and more. Pro unlocks additional premium transitions.
- 4Set the transition duration using the slider (typically 0.5 – 2 seconds).
- 5Click Apply to All to use the same transition throughout your entire video.
For professional content, use simple transitions like Dissolve or a subtle Slide. Save the dramatic effects for creative social content.
Lesson 2.4 — Applying Video Filters and Effects
Filters and color adjustments help you create a consistent visual style across your video.
- 1Click the video clip on the canvas.
- 2Click Edit Image/Video in the top toolbar.
- 3Filters tab: Choose a preset filter (Vivid, Drama, Fade, etc.) and adjust intensity with the slider.
- 4Adjust tab: Manually control Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Warmth, Blur, and more.
- 5Use the Flip button to mirror your clip horizontally or vertically.
- 6Speed controls: In the video toolbar, click the Speed option to slow down (0.25x) or speed up (2x) your clip.
Working with Audio in Canva
Music, voiceovers, sound effects, and audio controls
Lesson 3.1 — Adding Background Music
Canva has a built-in library of royalty-free music tracks you can add to any video. These tracks are safe to use on all major platforms.
- 1Click the Audio tab in the left panel.
- 2Browse categories: Chill, Upbeat, Cinematic, Inspirational, etc. Use the search bar to find a specific mood or genre.
- 3Hover over a track and click the Play button to preview it.
- 4Click the track (or the + icon) to add it to your video. It appears as a green bar in the timeline.
- 5Drag the green bar to reposition when the music starts. Drag the edges to trim it.
Canva's built-in tracks are royalty-free for use within Canva-created content. If you upload your own music, make sure you have a license for the platform you're publishing on (especially YouTube and Facebook).
Lesson 3.2 — Uploading Your Own Audio
You can upload any MP3, WAV, OGG, or AAC audio file to use in your videos.
- 1Go to Uploads in the left panel.
- 2Click Upload Files and select your audio file.
- 3Once uploaded, it appears in your Uploads tab under Audio.
- 4Click or drag it to your canvas to add it to the timeline.
- 5Trim and position it in the timeline just like background music.
Lesson 3.3 — Recording a Voiceover
Canva allows you to record your voice directly inside the editor — no external tools needed. This is perfect for narrations, tutorials, and course videos.
- 1Click the Audio tab in the left panel.
- 2Click Record Audio. Grant microphone permission when prompted.
- 3A recording panel opens. Position the playhead to where you want the voiceover to begin.
- 4Click the red Record button and speak clearly. Click Stop when done.
- 5Your voiceover appears as an audio bar in the timeline. Trim and reposition as needed.
- 6You can record multiple takes and keep the best one.
Record in a quiet room. Speak 6–8 inches from your microphone. Use a script or bullet points to stay on track. You can record section by section rather than all at once.
Lesson 3.4 — Adjusting Volume and Audio Controls
Balancing audio levels between your video's original sound, background music, and voiceover is essential for a professional result.
- 1Click any audio bar in the timeline to select it.
- 2A Volume slider appears. Drag it left (quieter) or right (louder). 0–100% scale.
- 3To mute the original video audio: click your video clip → click the Speaker icon in the toolbar → drag volume to 0.
- 4Fade In / Fade Out: Click audio bar → look for the Fade controls. Set fade duration (in seconds) for smooth entrances and exits.
- 5General rule: Background music at 15–25%, voiceover at 80–100%, video audio at 50–70%.
| Audio Layer | Recommended Volume | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Original Video Audio | 50–70% | Natural speech and ambient sound |
| Background Music | 10–25% | Low enough not to compete with voice |
| Voiceover Narration | 80–100% | This is your primary message |
| Sound Effects | 30–60% | Accent moments, not distract |
Resizing Videos in Canva
Magic Resize, custom dimensions, and platform formats
Lesson 4.1 — Using Magic Resize (Canva Pro)
Magic Resize is one of Canva Pro's most powerful features. It instantly adapts your video to multiple platform sizes in one click, saving hours of manual reformatting.
- 1With your video design open, click Resize in the top-left toolbar.
- 2A panel opens with preset sizes for YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, LinkedIn, and more.
- 3Check the box next to each platform size you need. You can select multiple at once.
- 4Click Copy & Resize. Canva creates new copies of your design in each selected size.
- 5Review each resized version — Canva makes its best attempt to reposition elements, but you may need to manually adjust text and graphics.
Design your hero video at 1920×1080 (YouTube/widescreen), then use Magic Resize to create your Instagram and TikTok vertical versions. Always review and adjust — especially text that may get cut off.
Lesson 4.2 — Custom Resizing (Free and Pro)
Even without Canva Pro, you can create a new canvas at any custom dimensions — or start from one of Canva's free video presets.
- 1Click Create a Design → click Custom Size.
- 2Enter your width and height in pixels (or mm, cm, inches). Click Create New Design.
- 3Alternatively, in an existing design, go to File → Change Dimensions. Enter new dimensions and click Resize (this resizes without duplicating).
- 4After resizing, reposition elements as needed — some may have shifted.
| Format | Dimensions (px) | Aspect Ratio | Used For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Landscape / Widescreen | 1920 × 1080 | 16:9 | YouTube, TV, Presentations |
