Step-by-Step: Creating Your First Video

Phase 1 — Getting Started

Download & Install: Go to capcut.com or your device app store. Download the free app for iOS, Android, Windows, or Mac. Create a free account using your email, Google, TikTok, or Facebook login.

Open the App & Start a New Project: Tap the large "+" (New Project) button on the home screen. You will be prompted to import your video clips from your camera roll or device storage.

Import Your Media: Select one or multiple video clips, photos, or both. Tap "Add" to bring them into the project timeline. CapCut supports MP4, MOV, AVI, and image formats.

Set Your Aspect Ratio: Before editing, tap the canvas settings (top of the screen) and choose your ratio: 9:16 for TikTok/Reels, 16:9 for YouTube, 1:1 for Instagram feed.

Phase 2 — Basic Editing

Trim Your Clips: Tap a clip in the timeline. Drag the left or right edge inward to trim the start or end. Remove dead space before and after your main content.

Split a Clip: Move the playhead (white line) to where you want the cut. Tap "Split" at the bottom menu. This divides the clip into two separate segments you can delete or rearrange.

Reorder Clips: Press and hold any clip in the timeline, then drag it left or right to change its position in the sequence.

Adjust Volume: Tap a clip and select "Volume". Slide to increase or reduce clip audio. You can mute the original audio entirely if adding background music.

Add Background Music: Tap "Audio" at the bottom toolbar, then "Sounds." Browse CapCut's royalty-free music library or upload your own track. Tap "+" to add to the timeline. Trim and fade as needed.

Phase 3 — Enhancing Your Video

Apply a Filter: Tap a clip, select "Filter" from the bottom menu. Choose from categories: Cinematic, Portrait, Food, Vintage, Natural, etc. Adjust the filter intensity with the slider.

Add Text Overlay: Tap "Text" in the bottom toolbar. Select "Add Text." Type your message, choose a font, color, and animation style. Drag the text to position it on screen. Trim its duration on the text timeline.

Enable Auto-Captions: Tap "Text" → "Auto Captions." CapCut will use AI to transcribe your spoken words and generate timed subtitles automatically. Review and edit any errors.

Add Transitions: Tap the small white square between two clips on the timeline. Select a transition style (Slide, Fade, Zoom, Dissolve, etc.) and adjust its duration (0.1s–0.5s is standard).

Use Stickers & Overlays: Tap "Stickers" for animated elements. Tap "Overlay" to add a second video or image on top of your main clip (picture-in-picture). Resize and reposition as needed.

Speed Adjustment: Tap a clip → "Speed." Choose "Normal" for a simple multiplier (0.1x–100x) or "Curve" for a cinematic speed ramp that speeds up and slows down at specific moments.

Phase 4 — Color Grading & Effects

Manual Color Adjustment: Tap a clip → "Adjust." Fine-tune Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Warmth, Sharpness, Highlight, Shadow, and Vignette using individual sliders.

Apply Video Effects: Tap "Effects" → "Video Effects." Browse trending, cinematic, or neon effects. Effects can be applied to a specific section by trimming the effect layer on the timeline.

Body Effects (Mobile): Select "Effects" → "Body Effects" to add animated elements that track a person's movements in the video.

Phase 5 — Exporting Your Video

Preview Your Full Video: Tap the play button to watch your complete edit from start to finish. Make any final adjustments.

Set Export Settings: Tap the export button (arrow icon, top right). Choose resolution: 720p, 1080p, or 4K. Choose frame rate: 24fps (cinematic), 30fps (standard), or 60fps (smooth/gaming).

Export & Share: Tap "Export." The video will save to your device. You'll also see direct share options: TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, and more.

šŸ’” Pro Tip: Always export at 1080p / 30fps as a baseline for social media. Use 4K only when uploading to YouTube or for client deliverables where maximum quality is needed.

  • Set it to appear throughout the entire video at a consistent size and position
  • Use the same font family and color palette across all your videos for brand recognition
  • Save a project as your "brand template" and duplicate it for future videos

Keyboard Shortcuts (Desktop)

  • Spacebar — Play/Pause preview
  • Ctrl+Z — Undo last action
  • S key — Split clip at playhead position
  • Delete key — Remove selected clip
  • Ctrl+E — Export project

Content Strategy Tips for Entrepreneurs

  • Use bold captions so your message lands even when watched on mute
  • Keep short-form videos under 60 seconds for maximum completion rate
  • Repurpose one video into 3 formats: TikTok, Reel, and YouTube Short
  • End every video with a clear call-to-action (link in bio, comment below, etc.)
