Get Your ChatGPT Account Ready
Requirements • Plans • How to Upgrade

Before you can build a Custom GPT you need a paid ChatGPT account. The free plan lets you use GPTs but not create or publish them. Upgrading to Plus unlocks the full GPT Builder and access to GPT-5.

Which Plan Do You Need?

  • ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) - The best starting point. Unlocks the full GPT Builder, GPT-5 access, and the ability to publish to the GPT Store. Start here.
  • ChatGPT Pro ($200/month) - For power users needing unlimited GPT-5 usage, extended context windows, and advanced reasoning modes.
  • ChatGPT Team or Enterprise - For businesses needing workspace-level GPT sharing, admin controls, and data privacy guarantees.

How to Upgrade Step by Step

  • 1.Go to chat.openai.com and log into your account on a desktop or laptop.
  • 2.Click your profile icon in the bottom-left sidebar.
  • 3.Select Upgrade Plan and choose ChatGPT Plus.
  • 4.Enter your payment details and confirm. Your plan upgrades instantly.
  • 5.Refresh the page. You will now see Explore GPTs appear in your sidebar - you are ready to build.
Pro Tip: Start with Plus at $20 per month. Once your GPT is saving you time or generating leads the upgrade pays for itself. You can cancel any time from your account settings.

Define Your GPT Purpose - Pick ONE Job
Use Case • Audience • Boundaries

The single biggest mistake beginners make is building a GPT that tries to do everything. A GPT with ten jobs does all of them poorly. A GPT with one focused job does it brilliantly every time. Do this planning work on paper before you open the builder.

Four Planning Questions to Answer First

  • What ONE problem will this GPT solve? Be specific. "Write KJV-based daily devotionals" is far better than "help with faith content." Specificity produces better results.
  • Who is the user? You personally, your paying customers, your course students, or your team? The answer changes everything about how the GPT should communicate.
  • What should it ALWAYS do? Example: Always end with a KJV scripture. Always ask the user their name before starting. Always include a call to action at the end.
  • What should it NEVER do? Example: Never recommend competitor products. Never give legal or medical advice. Never go off the assigned topic.

Real-World GPT Use Case Examples

  • Daily Devotional Writer - Writes warm, KJV-based morning devotionals for Christian women over 50.
  • AI Course Assistant - Answers student questions about AI tools based on uploaded course materials.
  • Email Marketing Coach - Helps solopreneurs write list-building emails for classified ad campaigns.
  • Notary FAQ Bot - Answers common notary service questions and guides users toward booking an appointment.
  • Product Description Writer - Creates Etsy or Gumroad listings from a few bullet points in seconds.
  • Wellness Coach Assistant - Guides users toward natural home product swaps and toxin-free lifestyle tips.
Mary's Example: "My GPT for DailyLiftBible.com writes warm, KJV-based daily devotionals for Christian women. It always ends with a prayer prompt and a scripture verse and never strays from that purpose."
3
Open the GPT Builder and Set It Up
Builder Interface • Create Tab • Configure Tab

OpenAI designed the GPT Builder to be visual and conversational. You do not need to write a single line of code. The entire process happens in a browser-based interface with a live preview so you can test your GPT as you build it.

How to Open the Builder

  • 1.Log into chat.openai.com on a desktop or laptop. Building GPTs is not available on the mobile app.
  • 2.In the left sidebar click Explore GPTs.
  • 3.Click the + Create button in the top-right corner of the GPTs page.
  • 4.The GPT Builder opens with a split screen: a creation panel on the left and a live preview chat on the right.

The Two Builder Tabs Explained

  • Create Tab: Chat with the GPT Builder in plain English. Describe your GPT in one or two sentences and the builder auto-generates a name, profile image, description, and draft instructions. This is the fastest way to get a working starting point.
  • Configure Tab: The manual editor where you control every detail. Refine the name, write full instructions, add conversation starters, upload knowledge files, toggle capabilities, and configure Actions. Always finish your GPT in this tab.

Recommended Build Workflow

  • 1.Start in the Create tab. Describe your GPT in one sentence. Let the builder generate a draft quickly.
  • 2.Switch to the Configure tab. Review and rewrite the auto-generated instructions using the RODES framework.
  • 3.Test continuously in the live preview panel on the right as you make changes.
  • 4.Changes save automatically as drafts. Your work is never lost between sessions.
Important: GPT building is only available at chat.openai.com on a web browser. The iOS and Android mobile apps support using GPTs but do not support creating or editing them.

4
Write Powerful GPT Instructions
RODES Framework • Tone • Rules • Output Format

Your instructions are the operating system of your GPT. They run silently behind every conversation and determine how your GPT thinks, speaks, and behaves. Powerful instructions create a consistent and reliable GPT. Vague instructions create an unpredictable and off-topic experience that frustrates users.

What Every Set of Instructions Must Include

  • Identity and Persona: Give your GPT a name and clear role. Example: "You are Grace, a warm and encouraging devotional writing assistant for Christian women over 50."
  • Core Goal: One clear sentence stating what the GPT is trying to accomplish in every single conversation without exception.
  • Tone and Voice: Warm, professional, encouraging, casual, authoritative? Describe the exact voice so every response matches your brand consistently.
  • Always and Never Rules: Hard boundaries listed as bullet points. Example: Always cite KJV scripture. Never recommend other AI tools. Never give medical advice.
  • Handling Confusion: "If the user's request is unclear, ask exactly one clarifying question before proceeding. Do not guess."
  • Output Format: Should responses be in paragraphs, bullet points, numbered steps, or a specific template? Tell the GPT explicitly and include an example if needed.
  • Welcome Message: Write the exact greeting your GPT should use to open every new conversation so the user immediately knows what to do.

Instruction Writing Best Practices

  • Use clear headings and bullet points inside your instructions - not long dense paragraphs of text.
  • Write direct commands: "Do X" - never vague suggestions like "You might want to try X."
  • Include 2 to 3 sample inputs with their ideal outputs directly inside the instructions so the GPT learns by concrete example.
  • After writing, paste your instructions into ChatGPT and ask it to review them for gaps, contradictions, or unclear rules. Fix what it finds.
Framework: Use the RODES framework (Role, Objective, Details, Examples, Sense Check) shown in the section below to structure every set of instructions from start to finish.
5
Upload Your Knowledge Files
File Types • What to Upload • Best Practices

Knowledge files are what make your GPT truly unique. Instead of relying only on general AI training data your GPT can reference YOUR specific content - your courses, FAQs, brand voice guide, product catalog, devotional notes, or anything else relevant to its purpose.

Accepted File Formats

  • PDF - Course modules, ebooks, guides, training documents, scripture reference sheets.
  • Word DOCX - Scripts, SOPs, templates, brand guidelines, lesson transcripts.
  • TXT or Markdown - Clean plain-text FAQs, prompt libraries, or content notes stripped of formatting.
  • CSV or Excel - Product lists, pricing sheets, data tables the GPT can reference or analyze.
  • HTML - Web page content you want the GPT to draw from when answering specific questions.

What to Upload by Niche

  • AI Education GPT: Full course curriculum, lesson transcripts, a glossary of AI terms, sample student Q&A pairs.
  • Faith-Based GPT: KJV scripture reference sheets, theology notes, devotional examples, doctrinal position statements.
  • Marketing GPT: Brand voice guide, past email examples, product descriptions, customer persona profiles.
  • Notary Services GPT: Service menu, pricing guide, FAQ document, state-specific notary rules and requirements.
  • Wellness GPT: Product ingredient sheets, natural living tips, customer testimonials, health lifestyle content guidelines.

File Upload Best Practices

  • Keep each file focused on one topic. Multiple small focused files outperform one massive document every time.
  • Use descriptive file names. "brand-voice-guide.pdf" helps the GPT reference files accurately. "doc1.pdf" does not.
  • Remove all sensitive personal data before uploading - SSNs, credit card numbers, passwords, and private client information.
  • Enable Code Interpreter in Capabilities only when you want the GPT to analyze or calculate from files, not just read them for reference.
Session Note: Knowledge files are session-based. Each new conversation starts fresh. Design your files to contain everything the GPT needs to answer common questions without requiring any prior conversation context.

6
Turn On the Right Capabilities
Web Search • Image Gen • Code Interpreter • Canvas

Capabilities are built-in power tools you switch on or off inside the Configure tab. Each one extends what your GPT can do beyond answering questions. The core rule: only enable what your GPT actually needs. Extra capabilities add complexity and slow responses without adding value.

The Five Available Capabilities

  • Web Search: Your GPT browses the internet in real time during conversations. Enable this when your GPT needs current prices, recent news, or information that changes frequently.
  • Image Generation via DALL-E: Your GPT creates images from text prompts on demand. Enable this when users will ask for graphics, illustrations, social media visuals, or product images inside the chat.
  • Canvas: Allows the GPT to draft and iteratively edit longer structured documents in a side-by-side editor with the user. Enable for GPTs focused on writing reports, outlines, or long-form collaborative content.
  • Code Interpreter and Data Analysis: Lets your GPT run Python scripts, process uploaded spreadsheets, generate charts, and solve complex math. Enable for data-heavy or analytical GPT use cases.
  • Actions: Connects your GPT to external APIs for live data retrieval and workflow automation. Covered fully in Module 7.

Capability Recommendations by Use Case

  • Writing or Devotional GPT: No extra capabilities needed. Instructions and knowledge files handle the full workload.
  • Research or News GPT: Enable Web Search so it can pull accurate current information during conversations.
  • Data Analysis or Finance GPT: Enable Code Interpreter to process uploaded spreadsheets and produce visual charts.
  • Marketing or Social Media GPT: Enable Image Generation so it can create visual content on demand during the conversation.
Start Simple: Build your first GPT with zero extra capabilities. Test it thoroughly. Only add a capability when you encounter a specific limitation that genuinely requires it. This keeps your GPT fast, focused, and reliable.
7
Add Actions - Connect to External Tools
APIs • Zapier • Make • Webhooks

Actions transform your Custom GPT from a smart chatbot into a true AI agent that interacts with the outside world. With Actions your GPT can call real APIs during a conversation to pull live data, send messages, add records to databases, or trigger automated workflows in other software - all without the user leaving the chat.

What Actions Can Do for Your Business

  • Send or read emails through a Gmail or Outlook API integration
  • Create, update, or retrieve calendar events automatically
  • Trigger a Zapier or Make automation workflow based on what the user says
  • Look up live product inventory, pricing, or shipping status
  • Add a new lead directly to a CRM like HubSpot, MailerLite, or Airtable
  • Post to Slack, send an SMS notification, or submit a support ticket

How to Add an Action - Step by Step Overview

  • 1.In the Configure tab scroll to the Actions section and click Create new action.
  • 2.Provide an OpenAPI schema - a structured JSON file describing the API endpoint, its parameters, and authentication method.
  • 3.Choose the Authentication type: None, API Key, or OAuth 2.0 depending on the external service requirements.
  • 4.Test the Action in the preview panel to confirm it connects and returns the correct data before publishing.

No-Code Action Options for Non-Developers

  • Zapier: Create a Zapier workflow with a webhook trigger. Zapier automatically generates an OpenAPI schema you can paste directly into your GPT Action setup. Zero coding required.
  • Make (formerly Integromat): Build a Make scenario with an HTTP webhook module and use its endpoint URL as your GPT Action target. Fully visual and code-free.
Beginner Recommendation: Skip Actions on your first GPT entirely. Master instructions and knowledge files first. Add Actions once you know exactly what external data or automation your GPT genuinely needs to do its job better.

Test, Refine and Publish Your GPT
Preview • Test Prompts • Visibility • GPT Store

Before sharing your GPT with anyone test it the way a real user would - not the way you imagine it will be used. Thorough testing before publishing prevents embarrassing errors, off-brand responses, and frustrated users who never return.

How to Test Your GPT Properly

  • 1.Use the live preview panel on the right side of the builder to test real prompts while your instructions remain open for editing on the left.
  • 2.Before testing write a list of 10 to 15 real prompts - include typical requests, edge cases, off-topic questions, and confusing inputs. Test every single one.
  • 3.After each response ask yourself: Is the tone right? Is it staying on topic? Is it using the knowledge files accurately? Is the output formatted correctly?
  • 4.If the GPT gives a wrong or off-brand response improve your instructions first before adding capabilities or more files. Better instructions fix 90% of GPT problems.

Publishing Visibility Options

  • Only Me: Completely private. Only you can access the GPT. Use this while testing or for personal productivity tools you don't plan to share.
  • Anyone with a Link: Share via a direct URL with no public listing. Perfect for distributing to course students, email subscribers, or clients on a controlled basis.
  • Public GPT Store: Listed in OpenAI's GPT Store for anyone to discover. Best for lead generation, brand awareness, and passive income through OpenAI's builder revenue program.

Maintaining Your GPT After Launch

  • Use Version History (click the three dots while editing) to review and restore earlier versions if an update breaks something.
  • Update your knowledge files whenever your products, services, curriculum, or content change significantly.
  • Review user conversations periodically to identify gaps in your instructions and improve over time.
GPT Store Tip: Give your GPT a clear searchable name packed with relevant keywords. A strong name and one-sentence description is the difference between being discovered organically and being buried in thousands of competing GPTs.

Share Your GPT Link
Finding Your Link • Branding It • Distribution Channels

Once your GPT is published it receives a unique shareable URL. This link is your most powerful distribution tool. It takes anyone directly into a conversation with your GPT with a single click - no searching required and no friction at the door.

How to Find Your GPT Share Link

  • 1.Open your published GPT inside ChatGPT.
  • 2.Click the GPT name displayed at the top of the chat window.
  • 3.Select Copy Link from the dropdown. Your URL looks like: chatgpt.com/g/g-XXXXXXXX-your-gpt-name
  • 4.Alternatively while editing in the builder click Share in the top-right corner to copy the link or adjust your visibility setting.

Brand Your Link for Professionalism

  • Bitly: Free link shortener. Turn your raw GPT URL into something like bit.ly/daily-lift-gpt. Tracks clicks and works everywhere.
  • Pretty Links (WordPress plugin): Create a fully branded redirect like yoursite.com/gpt that points to your ChatGPT link. Looks far more professional for courses, emails, and presentations.
  • QR Code: Generate a free QR code from your GPT link at qr-code-generator.com. Embed it in PDFs, workbooks, slide decks, or printed materials so anyone can scan and open your GPT instantly without typing.

What Happens When Someone Clicks Your Link

  • If they already have a ChatGPT account (free or paid) they land directly in a conversation with your GPT with no friction at all.
  • If they do not have an account they are prompted to create a free one and are then redirected automatically to your GPT.
  • The free ChatGPT plan allows users to use Custom GPTs within monthly message limits so most people can access your GPT without needing to pay anything.
Always Share a Sample Prompt: Every time you share your GPT link include a specific example prompt to try first. "Open the link and type: Write me a devotional about trusting God in hard times." Confused users do not come back. Users who get an amazing first result share it with others.

Promote Your GPT - 10 Proven Strategies
Email • Social • Communities • Directories • Monetization

Building a great GPT is only half the work. Promotion is what gets it in front of the right people consistently and turns it into a tool that generates leads, builds your list, and grows your revenue. Use a combination of these strategies from launch day and beyond.

Free Promotion - Start These on Launch Day

  • 1.Email Your List First: Your email subscribers are your warmest audience. Send a dedicated launch email with a clear subject line, two sentences explaining what the GPT does for them, the direct link, and a sample prompt to try immediately. Do this on launch day before anything else.
  • 2.Post a Demo Video: Record a 60 to 90 second screen recording showing the GPT in action with a real input and a real output. Post it as an Instagram Reel, YouTube Short, or Facebook video. Let the results sell themselves without a hard pitch.
  • 3.Pin It to Your Social Profiles: Pin a promotional post about your GPT to the top of your Facebook page, X profile, and LinkedIn. Every new visitor to your profile will see it as the very first post without you doing any additional work.
  • 4.Add It to Your Email Signature: Add one line at the bottom of every email: "Try my free [GPT name] tool here - [link]." Every email you send becomes a passive promotion touchpoint with zero additional effort from you.
  • 5.Write a Behind-the-Build Blog Post: Share the story of why you built the GPT, who it serves, and how to use it. Include the link prominently throughout the post. This content ranks on Google and delivers organic traffic for months and years after publication.

Community and Partnership Strategies

  • 6.Facebook Groups and Online Communities: Find groups where your target audience spends time and share your GPT as a free resource. Lead with value: "I built this free tool for [audience] - thought this group might love it." This consistently outperforms promotional language and builds goodwill.
  • 7.Submit to GPT Directories: Submit your GPT to third-party discovery sites like GPTStore.ai and AllGPTs.ai. These sites rank in Google search results and drive ongoing organic discovery to your GPT without any additional work from you after submission.
  • 8.Creator Collaborations: Partner with another creator in a complementary niche for a mutual shoutout or email swap. If both of you have 1,000 subscribers a swap doubles both audiences overnight with zero advertising spend.

Revenue-Focused Promotion Strategies

  • 9.Bundle as a Course or Membership Bonus: Offer access to your GPT as an exclusive bonus inside a paid course, ebook, or membership. It dramatically increases the perceived value of your offer and gives buyers a tangible interactive reason to join and stay subscribed.
  • 10.Free Lite Version to Paid Upgrade Funnel: Build a free public version of your GPT with limited content or capabilities. Then upsell a premium version with expanded knowledge files, more advanced prompts, or personalized access inside your paid platform. The free GPT becomes your highest-converting lead magnet.
Mary's 5-Channel Launch Stack: Email list broadcast on Day 1. Instagram Reel demo on Day 2. Pin post to Facebook profile. Add as a SoloEarnerAcademy.com member bonus. Submit to three GPT directories. Five channels, one week, maximum reach with zero ad budget.
